In the year 1985, Somanath became a part of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), and following that, he held various positions within the organization. These roles include serving as a Project Manager for the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), Deputy Director for the structure Entity/Propulsion and space ordnance Entity, and Project Director for the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle(GSLV Mk-3), among others.

In the early stages, Somanath was engaged in the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle project as well. Furthermore, commencing from November 2014, he assumed the role of Deputy Director within the Propulsion & Space Ordnance Entity, maintaining this position for a specific duration.

In June 2015 Somanath took on the role of Director at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, where his responsibilities encompassed the design supervision of liquid propulsion systems tailored for launch vehicles and space missions.

He also contributed to numerous noteworthy projects, among them are Chandrayaan-1, India’s pioneering lunar mission; Chandrayaan-2, India’s subsequent lunar mission that successfully placed a lander and rover on the moon’s surface; and Gaganyaan-3, India’s first human spaceflight endeavor.

S Somanath became the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on January 14, 2022. He is the 10th person to hold this position and the first from Kerala.

Throughout his tenure for the development of the Chanrayaan-3 project, Somanath assumed a pivotal role in steering the progression of Chandrayaan-3. Impressively, On August 5, this mission seamlessly navigated its way into lunar orbit, marking a remarkable feat.
