In 2013, following the passing of his father, Chandra Shekhar Azad was determined to fulfill his father’s ultimate wish—to elevate the Dalit community and establish them as a prominent political force while safeguarding them against discrimination. He embarked on various endeavors to amplify the voice of the Dalit community.

  • Founding of the Bhim Army: Initially, Chandra Shekhar Azad pursued a career in law, but after the unfortunate demise of his father, he resolved to fulfill his true aspirations. In 2014, he co-founded the Bhim Army alongside two other members, Satish Kumar, and Vinya Ratan Singh. The main agenda of the Bhim Army is to protect the rights of Dalits and protect them from discrimination.

Controversy:

  • In June 2017, the UP police arrested him as alleged of inciting violence in Saharanpur of Uttar Pradesh.
  • On 21 December 2020, he faced another arrest for participating in a protest march against the CAA Bill.
  • He faced arrest due to his involvement in the protest against the demolition of Shri Guru Ravidas Gurughar in Tughalqabad.
  • Chandrashekhar Azad, along with 500 members of the Bhim Army, was arrested for protesting against the Hathras Gang rape.
  • An unknown assailant shot Chandra Shekhar Azad in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 28, 2023. The bullet grazed his abdomen, leading to his admission to Deoband Hospital. During the incident, his younger brother and five others were present in a car. The attack aimed to impede the progress of the Bahujan Mission Movement.
