Who is Chandra Shekhar Azad Ravan?

Chandra Shekhar Azad Ravan is an Indian political activist who founded the Bhim Army. Initially, he was the Indian Lawyer who turned activist Ambedkarite Dalit. He primarily works for the upliftment and rights of Dalits. Publicly he is known by the name “Ravan.”

Family:

Chandra Shekhar Azad Ravan was born on December 3, 1986, in Ghadkauli, Chhutmalpur, a region in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He belongs to the Chamaar cast, a Dalit Schedule cast.

Father: His father’s name is Govardhan Das. He is a retired principal of the public school. His father was the person who seeds into him to fight for the rights of Dalits. On 11 January 2013, his father got dead. Before his death, he Swore in Chandra Shekar Azad to fight to make the Dalit community a main ruling party till his last breath.

Mother: His mother’s name is Kamlesh Devi. She is a housewife who takes care of the family.

In 2013, following the passing of his father, Chandra Shekhar Azad was determined to fulfill his father’s ultimate wish—to elevate the Dalit community and establish them as a prominent political force while safeguarding them against discrimination. He embarked on various endeavors to amplify the voice of the Dalit community.

• Founding of the Bhim Army: Initially, Chandra Shekhar Azad pursued a career in law, but after the unfortunate demise of his father, he resolved to fulfill his true aspirations. In 2014, he co-founded the Bhim Army alongside two other members, Satish Kumar, and Vinya Ratan Singh. The main agenda of the Bhim Army is to protect the rights of Dalits and protect them from discrimination.

• Vocal Advocacy: Chandra Shekhar Azad’s law degree equipped him with the skills to engage in debates and effectively raise his voice for the rights of the Dalit community at the local level. He commenced delivering speeches to various groups, passionately advocating for the protection of the Dalit community against discrimination and striving to uplift them.

• Launching of Azad Smaj Party: On the 86th birth anniversary of Kashi Ram, he launched the Indian Political party ” Azad Samaj Party.” The agenda of forming the party is to contest every seat in the Bihar legislative council elections 2020.

• Joining with Radical Democratic Alliance: He joined the Radical Democratic Alliance to contest in the Bihar parliamentary election 2020. The Jan Adhikar party of Rajesh Ranjan leads the Radical Democratic Alliance.

Controversy:

• In June 2017, the UP police arrested him as alleged of inciting violence in Saharanpur of Uttar Pradesh.
• On 21 December 2020, he faced another arrest for participating in a protest march against the CAA Bill.
• He faced arrest due to his involvement in the protest against the demolition of Shri Guru Ravidas Gurughar in Tughalqabad.
• Chandrashekhar Azad, along with 500 members of the Bhim Army, was arrested for protesting against the Hathras Gang rape.
• An unknown assailant shot Chandra Shekhar Azad in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 28, 2023. The bullet grazed his abdomen, leading to his admission to Deoband Hospital. During the incident, his younger brother and five others were present in a car. The attack aimed to impede the progress of the Bahujan Mission Movement.
