He did primary education in the local school of Devalali Pravara village in Rahuri taluka of Ahmednagar district.

Later, he moved to Mumbai for higher education but was unable to continue his education due to his father’s sudden death. He returned to Baramati and started to work in cooperative societies to support his family.

  • After his father’s death, he started to work in social and political work through cooperative societies.
  • His political career started when he was elected to the board of the cooperative sugar factory in 1882 in Pune.
  • In 1991 he was elected to the post of chairman of the Pune District Co-operative Bank(PDC).
  • During 1991-1992, he also contested in the Lok Sabha election from Baramati. But he vacated the seat for his uncle Sharad Pawar.
  • Between 1991-1992, he was working as a minister of agriculture and power in the Sudhakar Naik’s government.
  • From 1992-1993, he served as a junior minister and worked on the soil conservation portfolio.
  • In 1999, he got elected as the irrigation minister in the Vilasrao Deshmukh’s government.
  • Between 2003-2004, when Sushilkumar Shinde was in power, he was given additional responsibilities of rural development.
  • In 2019, he took oath for the post of Deputy Chief Minister for the Maha Vikas Aghadi administration.
  • In 2022, due to the Maharashtra government crisis, the Maha Vikas Aghadi government collapsed due to some internal issues in Shiv Sena. After this, Shiv Sena handshakes with BJP to form the government with Eknath Shinde as a Chief Minister, and Pawar becomes the opposition leader.
  • On 2 July 2023, Pawar once again took the oath of the Deputy chief minister in the coalition government of Shiv Sena and BJP.

Controversies

In September 2012, Vijya Pandhare, a former bureaucrat of Maharashtra, put allegations on Ajit Pawar of a 70,000 crore scam. Following the allegation, he had to resign from the post of deputy chief minister. After getting the clean chit, he was reinstated in the position of deputy CM.

In 2013 when the Maharastra was facing a drought crisis. During that critical situation, he made the most controversial statement,” If there is no water in the dam, Should we urinate into it?”

In April 2014, during Supriya Sule’s campaign for the general election in the Masalwadi village in the Baramati constituency. He threatens the villager to vote for her, otherwise, he will cut their water supply.

Bollywood actress Suchitra Krishnamurthy puts allegations on Ajit Pawar for kidnapping his friend Promod Goenka. She put allegations that Ajit Pawar and Promod Goenka had some business-related issues. Suchitra claims that Gayatri Pant Pratinidhi informed her that Ajit Pawar had taken an oath to teach Pramod a lesson due to a business dispute.

In October 2021, the Income Tax department conducted raids on different properties belonging to Ajit Power and his relatives.
